Two Ways To Start Your Soft Chew

Images: AI-generated illustrations.

Start from an existing soft chew formula or build one around your own product. Which route fits depends on your target species, ingredient plan, daily serving, positioning, and destination market. Most brands know within one call.

Fastest Route
Proven Base, Your Brand
Route 01

Start With An Existing Formula

The practical choice when you already know which supplement category you want to launch and do not need to build the recipe from zero.

Pick one of our available formulas, review the ingredient specification, then confirm the product details your project needs. Adjustments are reviewed before the final spec is locked.

You Review And Confirm
  • Target species
  • Existing ingredient formula
  • Chew weight and serving size
  • Shape and flavor
  • Texture requirements
  • Pack count and packaging
  • Destination market

Best if: you want a first SKU on shelf quickly, in a category already familiar in your target market, with your own packaging and label.

Route 02

Develop A Custom Formula

Choose this route when you already have your own formula, active ingredient targets, or a product concept that no existing base covers.

Before any sample is made, we go through your main requirements with you. Formula, chew specification, and serving concept are reviewed as one product, not as separate line items.

04 / Formula & Actives

Formula & Active Ingredients

Your soft chew formula is more than an ingredient list. The actives, the amount delivered per chew, the daily serving, the chew weight, and the finished product spec all have to work together, or the label claim will not hold.

Whether you start from an existing formula or bring your own ingredient targets, we review these five points together before anything is finalized.

How It Comes Together

From Ingredients To Finished Chews

AI-generated process illustrations.

Four checkpoints between your ingredient idea and a formula we can sample. Each one is confirmed with you before the next starts.

  1. Select Active Ingredients

Confirm the ingredient combination for your species, product positioning, and how the chew will be used day to day.

  2. Define The Daily Serving

Set how much of each active your pet owner should receive in the recommended daily serving. This is the number your label claim rests on.

  3. Match The Chew Specification

We check the active load against chew weight, chews per serving, and the rest of the formula so the piece can actually carry what the label says.

  4. Confirm The Finished Formula

Your final formula is documented with the agreed ingredient spec, serving concept, and chew spec before you approve the sample.

05 / Chew Specification

Size, Texture & Flavor

Images: AI-generated illustrations.

The formula is only part of your finished soft chew. Chew weight, shape, flavor, and texture also have to fit the species, the daily serving, and the active load.

We review these four together during development so the chew you ship matches both the formula and the way your customer will actually use it.

Chew Weight
01

Chew Weight

Piece weight is set by your formula and serving requirement. Our current reference production range is 0.5 to 3.5 g per chew, subject to final formula review.

Chew weight is reviewed together with:

Actives per serving
Chews per daily serving
Dog or cat use
Finished chew dimensions
Pack count

A higher active load does not always fit a smaller chew, so we settle formula and piece weight at the same time.

02

Shape

Shape depends on available tooling and your product concept. Shapes we can discuss include:

  • Heart
  • Bone
  • Paw
  • Fish
  • Round
  • Square

Your final shape is chosen from the options that run consistently at the agreed chew weight and formula. A shape that looks good in a render but breaks in the bag is not a shape we will recommend.

Tell us which shape fits your brand and we will confirm whether it works with your piece weight.

03

Flavor

Flavor is chosen around the species, the formula, and the actives inside the chew. Common options include:

  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Fish

If your formula contains ingredients with a strong natural taste or odor, such as fish oil or some botanicals, the flavor system is reviewed together with the active load rather than picked from a list.

Palatability is what decides whether the pet finishes the chew, so we confirm it at the sample stage.

04

Texture

Your chews need to stay easy to portion and handle while keeping the intended softness for the whole shelf life. Finished texture is affected by:

Formula composition
Active ingredient load
Moisture level
Chew weight
Packaging
Storage conditions

This is why texture is confirmed through the finished formula and your sample, not written into the spec as just "soft" or "hard".

04

Custom Printed Packaging MOQ

Printed bottles, pouches, labels, and other materials carry their own minimums from the packaging supplier.

Worth Knowing Early

Product MOQ And Packaging MOQ Are Not Always The Same

Your order can clear the production MOQ for the chews and still sit below the minimum the packaging supplier needs for fully customized printed materials. Knowing this before you plan your first run avoids a surprise at quotation.

Production MOQ

The Soft Chews

Set by the formula and chew specification. This is the minimum our line runs for your product.

The Printed Materials

Set by the packaging supplier, not by our production line. Fully customized printing usually needs a larger run.

  • Printed bottles or pouches
  • Custom printed labels and inner packing
  • Separate minimums per material

07 / Sample & Approval

Sample & Specification Approval

Images: AI-generated illustrations.

Your soft chew sample should confirm more than appearance and flavor. Before you approve production, the formula, chew spec, serving concept, and packaging details are reviewed together, as one product.

The specification you approve then becomes the reference for every production run and every batch inspection.

Illustration: Three types of soft chew samples and Zoe-branded sample jars

Sample

Your sample is made on the agreed formula and the product requirements you confirmed at the start, so what you receive is a real candidate, not a generic chew.

Use It To Check
  • Formula Version
  • Chew Weight
  • Shape & Appearance
  • Texture
  • Flavor
  • Daily Serving
  • Pack Count

Which of these matter most depends on your project. Tell us what you need to sign off on and we prepare the sample around it.

Illustration: Gloved hand comparing two soft chew sample batches

Review

Check the sample against the product you actually plan to launch, not only against how it looks in the hand.

If Something Needs To Change

Tell us exactly which part: chew weight, flavor, texture, shape, or a formula detail. A named change is fixed in one round; "make it better" usually takes three.

Base Feedback On

The physical sample and the requirements we agreed together, so both sides are judging the same thing.

Illustration: Two soft chew prototypes beside sample bags

Revision

When changes are needed, the revised sample and the updated specification are reviewed again together before anything is approved for production.

Watch For Knock-On Effects

A change to the formula, active level, chew weight, or serving size can shift other details, such as texture, pack count, or label claims. We flag these before the next sample, not after.

Most projects close in one or two revision rounds when the first feedback is specific.

Once you confirm the product, every agreed detail is recorded as the production reference for your SKU.

09 / Quality Control

Quality Control

AI-generated process illustrations.

Every batch of your chews is checked against the specification you approved, from incoming materials to finished product release. Inspection records, batch numbers, and test results are what prove the product in the carton matches the formula, physical spec, and packaging you signed off on.

Illustration: Closed ingredient pails and sealed bags on a workshop rack

Raw Material Verification

Your incoming ingredients are checked before they get anywhere near the mixer. Depending on the material and its specification, the review covers:

Material identity
Supplier documentation
Ingredient specification
Batch number
Certificate of Analysis
Packaging condition

Materials that miss the required specification are held and not released into your batch.

Illustration: Two brown soft chews in a weighing boat on a bench scale beside a sample tray and a Zoe-branded jar

In-Process Control

Checks run during production so variation is caught on the line, not in your warehouse. Typical production controls include:

Piece weight
Shape and appearance
Size consistency
Texture
Moisture or water activity
Batch uniformity

Results are compared with the production spec as they come in, so the line is adjusted the moment a parameter drifts outside the accepted range.

Illustration: Soft chew sample beside a compact moisture analyzer

Finished Product Testing

Finished chews are evaluated against the requirements of your formula and product spec. Where applicable, testing includes:

Microbiological testing
Active ingredient testing
Moisture or water activity
Piece weight
Appearance and texture
Net content
Packaging integrity

The exact test list depends on your formula, ingredients, and the product spec we agreed. Tell us what your market requires and it goes on the list.

Illustration: Zoe sample jar beside a clipboard at a review desk

Batch Release

A finished batch is released only against your confirmed specification and the inspection results it requires. Batch documentation you can receive:

Batch Number
Production Record
Inspection Results
Finished Product Spec
Certificate of Analysis
Traceability Information

The batch number on your carton links back to the production and inspection records for that run, so any question later can be traced to the exact batch.

10 / Stability

Stability & Shelf Life

AI-generated process illustrations.

Your soft chews need to hold more than their appearance in storage. Texture, moisture, odor, active levels, and packaging performance all decide whether the product still meets its spec at month twelve, not just on the day it ships.

So shelf-life claims are based on your finished formula, packaging format, and the stability data behind them, not one fixed period stamped on every product.

Illustration: Two halves of a brown soft chew showing its dense interior
01 / 04

Physical Stability

Your chews are reviewed for changes that alter the condition of the finished product in storage. Depending on the formula and testing program, this includes:

Texture and hardness
Moisture or water activity
Shape and appearance
Sticking or clumping
Oil separation
Odor changes
Package condition

Different actives, moisture levels, and chew weights age differently, which is why a fish oil chew and a probiotic chew do not share one stability plan.

Illustration: Soft chew sample beside a compact moisture analyzer
02 / 04

Active Ingredient Stability

If your formula carries a specified active, the shelf life has to consider whether that active is still within spec at the end of it, not only on the day of production.

Where applicable, retained samples or a stability program are used to check active levels at defined storage intervals, so the number on your label matches what is in the chew a year later.

The testing your product needs depends on the formula, the actives involved, and the product spec we agree together.

Illustration: White Zoe-branded sample jar and resealable pouch beside an open cardboard box on a packing desk
03 / 04

Packaging & Storage

Your packaging format is part of the stability plan, not an afterthought. These all change how the chews hold up after production:

  • Bottle Or Pouch Selection
  • Closure Performance
  • Moisture Protection
  • Pack Count
  • Storage Conditions

Confirm packaging together with the formula and the shelf life you intend to claim, rather than choosing it on appearance or unit cost alone.

Illustration: Zoe sample jar beside a clipboard at a review desk
04 / 04

Shelf-Life Confirmation

Your final shelf life is supported by the stability information available for the confirmed formula and packaging spec. Where records exist, they can include:

  • Retained Sample Records
  • Texture Or Appearance Records
  • Moisture / Water Activity Data
  • Active Ingredient Results
  • Packaging Condition

Need a specific shelf-life target for your market? Tell us during formula and packaging review so it is evaluated before the final product spec is approved, not after the first order.

Have a shelf-life target your team requires? Send it with your formula and packaging brief and we evaluate it before the spec is locked.

14 / FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions to consider before your first soft chew order. If yours is not here, Arlo answers it directly.

01

Can I start with an existing formula and still make changes?

Yes. An existing formula is a starting point. Your proposed changes are then reviewed against the ingredient combination, active levels, chew weight, serving size, and finished product requirements.

Changes to flavor, shape, pack count, or packaging are usually handled separately from changes to the active formula. If the ingredient formula changes significantly, a revised sample and specification are needed before production approval.

02

How do you determine the amount of active ingredients in each chew?

The active amount is set against your intended daily serving, not just the amount in one chew.

The formula review looks at the target amount per daily serving, the number of chews per serving, the individual chew weight, and the total active load. These four have to work together before the finished specification can be confirmed.

03

Can a high level of active ingredients be put into a small soft chew?

Not always. Increasing the active load can change the required chew weight as well as flavor, texture, and the overall formulation. Some ingredients also have strong tastes, odors, or physical characteristics that limit how much fits into a smaller chew.

If you have specific active targets, send them with your intended chew size and daily serving so all three are reviewed together.

04

Can the same soft chew formula be used for both dogs and cats?

Not automatically. Dogs and cats have different nutritional requirements, ingredient considerations, serving sizes, and palatability preferences. A formula meant for both species is reviewed specifically for that use, rather than relabeling a dog formula for cats.

Confirm your target species at the start of formula development.

05

Can I change the chew weight, shape, flavor, and texture?

Yes, but they are not independent changes. Chew weight sets how much formula one piece can carry. Flavor may need to cover the natural taste of certain actives. Texture depends on the formula, moisture condition, and active load.

The final combination is confirmed through your sample and the finished product specification.

06

How does custom packaging affect the MOQ?

The production MOQ for the chews and the MOQ for packaging materials are not necessarily the same. Standard bottles, pouches, or labels can support a smaller run, while custom printed bottles, pouches, or other components carry their own minimums set by the packaging supplier.

Formula quantity, pack count, and packaging format are reviewed together before your final order quantity is confirmed.

07

How do I make sure the approved sample is used as the reference for production?

Approve the sample together with a written product specification, not on appearance alone. The specification records the formula version, active ingredient specification, chew weight, shape, texture, flavor, daily serving, pack count, and packaging details.

That document becomes the reference for production and batch inspection. Any later change is reviewed and recorded before it enters production.

08

What tests can be included in the batch COA?

The COA reflects the testing actually required for your formula and finished product. Depending on the agreed specification and testing program, that can include microbiological results, active ingredient testing, moisture or water activity, physical specifications, and other relevant quality parameters.

Test items are confirmed per product, not copied from a generic COA used for every soft chew.

How is the shelf life of a soft chew determined?

Shelf life is based on the finished formula, the packaging system, and the stability information available. In storage the relevant changes include texture hardening, sticking, moisture variation, oil separation, odor changes, packaging performance, and where applicable, changes in specified active levels.

Raise your shelf-life target during formula and packaging development instead of expecting one fixed period for every product.

What information is needed to review a soft chew for my destination market?

Start with the destination country or region, target species, ingredient formula, active ingredient levels, daily serving, intended positioning, packaging format, and proposed label claims. These show whether the formula, serving directions, claims, label information, or supporting documents need further review before artwork and production are finalized.

Local registration, import, and labeling requirements should also be confirmed with your team or regulatory adviser in the destination market.
